A Different Kind of Preschool
Community Montessori School is not a childcare center, but a school with a high quality early childhood program. Preschool children, ages 2 ½ - 6, are enrolled in a five days per week Primary program at Community Montessori School. We offer half-day, full-day, and extended day options. We offer a tradition school calendar and a year round calendar. We currently have two primary classrooms.
Practical Life activities are designed to build coordination and develop both concentration and control. Exercises involving pouring, cutting, and sewing also help to develop and enhance their fine motors skills.
Sensorial activities tap into the natural curiosity of children to explore size, shape, color, texture, temperature, and even pitch. Sensorial activities give children concrete activities to help present abstract concepts in language and mathematics.
Language activities build reading and writing skills. The sounds of the alphabet are taught phonetically, and cursive handwriting is introduced early to capitalize on the child's natural inclination to draw curved shapes.
Mathematics activities use hands-on materials such as number rods and bead chains to introduce the concepts of addition and other operations in very concrete ways. This helps build a strong foundation for reasoning and problem-solving, and as children develop understanding, the materials move from concrete to abstract.
Cultural Subjects expose children to the world around them. Children do extensive work with puzzle maps, and classrooms are filled with photographs and cultural objects from around the world.
Our Primary classrooms are places where children are actively engaged in learning. It is an environment where they enjoy freedom of movement and choice, while meeting expectations of grace and courtesy and developing self-discipline. At Community Montessori, our teachers, called directresses, are degreed professionals with formal Montessori training and a passion for working with children. The classroom directress gives one-on-one lessons, so your child gets the personal attention they need. Parents are kept well informed, with Parent Education Nights, Parent/Teacher conferences, and parent-child mornings each semester - a great opportunity to visit the classroom with your child and see his or her work.
As the only school in the Indianapolis area recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), Community Montessori School offers a true Montessori experience.
